Phoenix Nights is made up of major and minor characters, most of whom work in the club.

- Brian Potter - the manager and former-licencee of the Phoenix Club. He is in a wheelchair although his paralysis is questionable. Although he tries his best to keep the club open but is regularly met with misfortune as numerous things go wrong.
- Jerry "St. Clair" Dignan - Jerry is the compere of the club. He and the band provide the main entertainment in the club. After the club was burnt down due to arson, Potter is refused a renewed licence and so he uses Jerry to get a new one.

- Holy Mary - Mary is the very religious barmaid of the club. She is always trying to convert Brian and the others to Christianity with her numerous slogans, such as "CH--CH. What's missing? UR."
- Marion - The other barmaid of the Phoenix Club.
- Kenny 'Dalglish' Senior - His role at the club is not specified. Kenny is well known for being a big liar and he regular tells unbelievable stories, including that he was a firefighter in Mexico, that he slept with Bonnie Langford and that he once played swingball with Robert De Niro.
- Young Kenny - A handyman at the Phoenix Club, Young Kenny was an unintelligent but loyal member of staff. His lack of common sense normally led to embarrassing moments for him and the club. One such event saw him having his face painted with spray paint. Due it being permanent, he was left as a lion for the whole of the second series.
- Max and Paddy - The doormen of the club, Max and Paddy share a brotherly bond. While Max is the reserved and sensible one, Paddy is the sexually active and horny one. Towards the end of the second series, they ran away in a camper van and toured the UK.
- Les Alanos - Made up of Les and Alan, Les Alanos is the house band. The two of them are known to make false rumours up to scare and confuse Brian, such as new employee Ray Von being a convicted murderer.
- Ray Von - He is the resident DJ of the club. During the start of his career at the Phoenix Club, Brian was convinced that he was a murderer and was warned by Les and Alan not to fire him. It was later revealed that he had not killed anyone. As a DJ and electrician, his taste in music and approach to electronics leave a lot to be desired.
- Spencer - A barman of the club and once temporary DJ, Spencer is a hardworking and naive member of staff.
- The Captain - Gavin 'The Captain' Gladstone was once an elderly employee of the Phoenix. Due to a malfunction of Ray Von's smoke machine, the Captain died of an asthma attack.
- Den Perry - Perry owns the rival club and constantly provides the Phoenix Club with dodgy acts and causing problems for the club. At the end of the first series, he sets the club alight but is only arrested for it at the end of the second series after accidentally admitting it on the club's intercom.
Minor Characters[]
Minor characters are mainly made up customers, acts and locals but other characters exist, such as partners of workers. As further episode pages are being written, this list will expand.
- Young Mary - The Daughter of Holy Mary, Young Mary works behind the bar at the Phoenix and is involved with Paddy.
- Mike Fiddler - The lead singer of band Half a Shilling. He is a blatant racist and writes racist songs.
- Debra Quinn - A writer for the Bolton Independent. She interviews Potter regarding the opening of the Phoenix Club, bringing up the demise of his previous clubs.
- Moira - A regular of the Phoenix Club who attends numerous events. Moira and her friend are referred to as 'the Glamour Girls'. She became a widow after the death of her husband Ronny.
- Dodgy Eric - Eric provides Potter with dodgy devices for his club, including a rodeo, a six foot KerPlunk and indoor golf.
- Wild Bill - This man and his horse provide the act for the Wild West Night.
- Edie - A friend of Holy Mary and a regular member of the exercise sessions.
- Clinton Baptiste - A fake psychic whose recommended to Jerry by Den Perry. His act leaves members of the audience offended.
- Keith Lard - A jobsworth fire inspector who is well known for shutting down clubs on the smallest of technicalities. He had an infamous reputation for having sexual relations with dogs.
- Paul Le Roy - The host of Chorley FM. He sometimes hosts Talent Trek.
